The storied history of cocaine is one of those subjects that has captured the imagination of pop culture connoisseurs for generations. The tale of this historic drug has been delivered through a variety of TV shows and movies. From its origins to the famous names who have consumed the internationally known “party favor,” cocaine has been immortalized both on and off the big screen. And in Griselda, the Netflix series starring Sofia Vergara and Martín Rodríguez, the story of a powerful drug cartel emerges once again.

Griselda is a story that was inspired by Griselda Blanco Restrepo, a key figure in the cocaine trade between Colombia and the United States during the 1970s and ‘80s. In the Netflix series, Vergara plays Griselda and gives a transformative performance as the Colombian drug lord. As Griselda, Vergara is ruthless when it comes to her money and compassionate when it comes to her three sons. It’s an award-worthy performance worth watching.

Rodríguez plays Griselda’s right-hand man and enforcer Rivi, a sexy yet chilling character with a deadly mystique that should never be underestimated. Together, Griselda and Rivi would build one of the largest drug empires that would ever flow through the Miami area.
