In 2016, we’ve seen a variety of song lyrics that have increased the popularity of songs, making them either the center of conversation on social media, profitable on iTunes or chart-toppers on Billboard. Case in point, Beyonce’s latest single “Sorry” had fans in a frenzy when it dropped in April with the song’s lyrics that say, “He better call Becky with the good hair.”

Then in the world of hip-hop, Brooklyn-based MC Desiigner released one of the biggest songs of 2016, “Panda.” With his rapid-fire bars, mixed with the song’s hypermelodic sound, “Panda” earned Desiigner not only a record deal on Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music label, but also his first No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. Desiigner also made history with the song, as he became the first U.S. born rapper to hit the No. 1 spot with his very first single.

The unique appeal of “Panda” starts with the ambiguous lyrics and the hook “I got broads in Atlanta,” that’s blended with a hot beat that only cost Desiigner $200 from a kid in Europe.

With comparisons to Future and hip-hop heavyweights backing the 19-year-old, the expectations are high for a follow-up hit. Desiigner is expected to release a full album soon, which could solidify his stance as a powerful New York MC.
