Nicki Minaj’s ‘Super Freaky Girl’
Debuts at No. 1 on Hot 100 Chart
Nicki Minaj is ending the summer on a “super” high note. Minaj’s latest single, “Super Freaky Girl,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The history-making single samples Rick James’ 1981 hit, “Super Freak.” A snippet of “Super Freaky Girl” first appeared on Minaj’s TikTok account on July 12. Fans quickly started sharing and using the sound on the social media platform, which helped to build anticipation for the song’s official release on Aug. 12.
“Super Freaky Girl” is Minaj’s first No. 1 on the Hot 100 as a solo artist. It’s her third overall, following her collaboration with 6ix9ine for the single “Trollz” and her feature on “Say So” with Doja Cat. Both songs were released in 2020.
Minaj has made history with her new track, being the first single to debut at No. 1 by a woman this year. It’s also the first hip-hop song to debut at No. 1 by a solo female artist since Lauryn Hill’s 1998 hit, “Doo Wop (That Thing).”
The music video for the single hasn’t been released yet. However, Minaj will be co-hosting the MTV Video Music Awards with LL Cool J and Jack Harlow on Sunday, Aug. 28. Minaj will also be honored with the coveted Video Vanguard Award. So, fans may see the first live performance of the rapper’s new hit single on one of music’s biggest nights.
