Based on the life of track and field legend Jesse Owens, Race is a biographical sports drama directed by Stephen Hopkins and starring Stephan James.

Owens had the desire to be the greatest athlete the world had ever seen. He competed in the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games and went on to win four gold medals, an accomplishment unprecedented at the time. Owens not only overcame the stereotypes and prejudices that African Americans faced, but also battled a poisoned world that Adolf Hitler excitedly took credit for. Aryan supremacy continued to rule with an iron fist.

John Boyega was originally cast in the title role, but dropped out in order to be a part of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The part was then passed on to current lead Stephan James.

Director Hopkins has a fairly diverse filmography: A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child, Predator 2, Blown Away, Lost in Space, and The Reaping. Here’s hoping Hopkins’ version of Jesse Owens’ story is as satisfying as Warrior or Unbroken.

Race will be released theatrically on Feb. 19. The film also stars William Hurt, Jeremy Irons, and Jason Sudeikis.
