Ah, brunch. The word alone has different meanings to different people. To some, going to brunch means eating with family after church and enjoying quality time together. To others, brunch is a continuation of the Saturday night party. You might have gotten little sleep, but that doesn’t stop the urge to keep the weekend going. And to some of us, brunch is a time to sit on a patio, enjoy the Houston weather and live in the moment while sipping on a mimosa.

But having brunch in the fall is a bit different than having brunch in the summer. In the summertime, you’re almost guaranteed great weather, with the luxury of wearing shorts and a tank top.

However, brunch in the fall can seem a bit more festive with chefs rolling out new menu items to try, bartenders making specialty drinks, and not to mention, you get to wear that hot new jacket that you picked up at Armani.

And as a restaurant that knows how to keep guests engaged and well-fed, The General Public recently won me over with its brunch menu of creative, must-taste options. For starters, ever since my heyday as a waiter at Pappasito’s, I’ve always had an affinity for quail. It was a bird that could go head-to-head with chicken and had its own unique flavor. Apparently, The General Public felt the same way, as their Crispy Quail and Hot Cakes was my favorite dish from the brunch menu. The dish is a spin on your typical chicken and waffles that you’ll find at most brunch-ready restaurants, and certainly in a league of its own.

The brunch menu also includes the Bacon Crab Stack, which is a jumbo lump crab cake, smoked bacon, a soft fried egg and a green chile cream and simple salad. Then there’s the Mexican-inspired Shakshuka with crushed tomato, toasted cumin and smoked paprika that’s topped off with a soft poached egg and a light baguette.

The General Public is open for brunch every Saturday and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with $1 mimosas. This place is worth the visit.
