The crew of the USS Enterprise are ambushed by a relentless new alien race. A devastating battle with an unfamiliar yet extremely powerful enemy causes Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew to abandon the spacecraft they’ve learned to call home. Suddenly stranded on a far-off planet with no escape or rescue plan, a merciless alien commander (Idris Elba) begins hunting them down.

Justin Lin, known best for the Fast and Furious franchise, takes over directing duties from J.J. Abrams. In addition to Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg (who also co-wrote the film), John Cho, and Anton Yelchin (in one of his final on-screen roles) are also returning. Sofia Boutella, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deep Roy join Elba as new cast members.

The film was pushed back from its original release date to coincide with the 50th anniversary celebration of Gene Roddenberry’s original television series. Edgar Wright, Rupert Wyatt, Morten Tyldum, Daniel Espinosa, Duncan Jones, and Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Jonathan Frakes were all considered as director before Lin was hired.

Star Trek Beyond was released in theaters in 2D, 3D, Real 3D, and IMAX 3D on July 22, and made $59.6 million on opening weekend.
