Thirty years after the events of Return of the Jedi and 10 years after the release of Revenge of the Sith, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has no input whatsoever from creator George Lucas. Instead, director J.J. Abrams is set to reveal his take on a galaxy far far away.

The new film will introduce new heroes, including a reformed stormtrooper named Finn (John Boyega), a desert forager named Rey (Daisy Ridley) and a Resistance X-wing pilot named Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac). The Force-wielding and Darth Vader enthusiast Kylo Ren will be the film’s vicious antagonist.

The Force Awakens is the first film of a new Star Wars trilogy. Rian Looper’s Episode VIII is due May 26, 2017, while Colin Trevorrow was announced as the director of Episode IX.

After the disastrous prequels, Abrams has his work cut out for him in making a film that lives up to the beloved original trilogy. The film already appears to be visually stunning, but what could be the payoff of hiding Luke Skywalker for this long?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be theatrically released in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D on Dec. 18. The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Lupita Nyong’o, Andy Serkis and Max von Sydow, while Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Peter Mayhew all return.
