Picture this: A young, black attorney defending another black man against a white woman that is accusing him of sexual assault. Though the truth is that he is innocent, they are faced with more than just a court case. They are faced with the heavy reality of racial segregation.

That was Thurgood Marshall’s reality. His race made him a target for society and a beacon of hope for his community, both heavy burdens to bear. In the film Marshall, we see just how heroic Thurgood Marshall, played by Chadwick Boseman, had to be to pursue his dreams.

Boseman and Josh Gad, who plays the role of Marshall’s sidekick, Sam Friedman, tell an intense story of adversity and connection. Friedman is a Jewish insurance lawyer with no criminal law experience, and Marshall is an attorney for the NAACP, but they come together to try a case that is even bigger than they may think.

This film also stars Kate Hudson, James Croswell, Sterling K. Brown and Dan Stevens. Together, this cast gives a dynamic performance that highlights an era of racism, Anti-Semitism, and the ability to prevail in spite of.
